The right backing material is installed, patching compound is applied in layers, sanding is done between layers, and edges are feathered to allow the repair to blend in with the wall without being noticed.

The cause of the crack is evaluated prior to deciding on the repair method; if the crack is due to a structural movement problem, then it must be treated differently from a crack that is caused by inadequate original taping.
